In December 2015 the University of Göttingen hosted 12 supervisors and co-supervisors during the U4 Workshop 'Supervising International Doctoral Candidates'. The workshop was jointly organized by the teams of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and Göttingen International.
After a warm welcome by Professor Hiltraud Casper-Hehne, Vice-President of International Affairs at University of Göttingen, and Lisa Korn, coordinator of the team of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, the participants from Groningen, Uppsala and Göttingen started to exchange ideas, perspectives and experiences about the supervision of international doctoral candidates.
Among many other supervision related topics, questions such as "what do I need to do in order to be "good" supervisor?" and "how can I overcome problems and avoid cultural misunderstandings?" were discussed. Moreover, participants exchanged examples of good practice in supervisory procedures and tools that facilitate the supervisory process.
On the evening of the first day, the participants and the workshop facilitators Ute Noack and Helmut Brentel as well as the workshop coordinators Lisa Korn and Marco Lange visited Göttingen's Christmas Market right in the heart of Göttingen's beautiful old city centre.
After a second day of intense exchange of experiences, participants concluded how they "enjoyed the interactions", that they benefited from the "very useful exercises" and that "it would be great to have a follow-up with the group".
