SoNAR (Social Network Analysis and Research) brings together PhD students and researchers in the domain of social netwok theory for two-days of intensive workshops (held in 2012 and 2014).
The aim of the SoNAR workshops is to focus on the difficult relationship between theoretical and methodological perspectives in social network theory. In interaction with the PhD students, we have a closer look at any issue related to the link between theory formation and empirical investigation: the theoretical foundations of the Ph.D. project, the rationale behind the hypotheses, the behavioural model and assumptions one uses, how the argumentation links to previous theories in the field, which gaps there are in previous theories and the theories used in the Ph.D. project, to what degree the operationalizations reflect the theoretical constructs, to what degree the empirical findings inform further theorizing, etc.
During the workshops a bottom-up approach is used. Ph.D. students are invited to submit papers which outline their research projects for feedback and advice from both staff members and peers.
