18The U4 Network intends to take account of the growing importance of research infrastructures at European universities by making strategic agreements and setting common goals in the area of university collections.

With the Gustavianum in Uppsala, the envisaged Science Museum at Ghent, the University Museum in Groningen and the conceptualized "House of Knowledge" in Göttingen, all four partners are pursuing the same objectives:

  • enhancing the use and employability of the academic collections for cutting-edge research
  • didactically valuable and practical teaching
  • the communication of science to a broader public

Alongside the further exchange of knowledge and ideas on the physical organisation of collections and museums, the U4 partners plan to jointly develop a cross-university framework for the digitization of their collections and a harmonized, interoperable data management, linking and liaising with other European universities.

At the four partner universities, complementary digitization will have to be undertaken, serving as the nucleus for the envisaged virtual "European University Museum" as a long-term goal. The comprehensive holdings, physically distributed at the four universities, will be made accessible in a virtual exhibition as one source of knowledge for research, teaching and the public, thereby demonstrating the potential of the abovementioned cross-university framework.
